Ten Hag ‘convinced’ over £40m star’s ‘potential’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is ‘convinced’ that Donny van de Beek is capable of going on to become a success at Old Trafford and rejected three approaches for the Dutchman last summer, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils chief could sanction incomings and outgoings ahead of the January window slamming shut at the end of the month.

Man United transfer news – Donny van de Beek

According to 90min, van de Beek went into the early stages of 2023 having been granted permission to find a new club.

The report suggests Manchester United informed the central midfielder that they would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave Old Trafford, while Premier League clubs, along with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, had shown an interest.

Ten Hag also revealed that a loan move away from the Red Devils could be beneficial ahead of the fast-approaching deadline, but van de Beek will not be moving on after picking up a cruel injury.

The 25-year-old is set to miss the rest of the season after sustaining a knee problem during Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth earlier this month.

Van de Beek’s major setback came after transfer insider Dean Jones told GiveMeSport the former Ajax man needs to move onto pastures new.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about van de Beek?

Romano understands that Manchester United snubbed three proposals put forward for van de Beek during the closing stages of last summer’s transfer window.

The respected journalist is aware that the 19-cap Netherlands international is admired by ten Hag and the Red Devils will do all they can to ensure he has a speedy recovery.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “In the final days of the summer transfer window, before deadline day, they received three approaches from one Italian and two English clubs for Donny van de Beek.

“They said no because ten Hag is convinced about his potential, so I’m sure they will try to protect the player.”

How has van de Beek performed since joining Man United?

It has been a frustrating spell as, according to Transfermarkt, van de Beek has only registered four goal contributions in 60 Manchester United appearances.

That is an underwhelming return considering he headed to English football for the first time in his career after the Red Devils sealed a deal worth up to £40million for his services.

It also comes after van de Beek enjoyed huge success at Ajax, where he found the back of the net 41 times and racked up a further 34 assists.

If his season is over, as expected, the creator will end it having only been handed 294 minutes of action.

With that being the case, it is abundantly clear that the £120,000-per-week van de Beek’s stint at Manchester United has not gone to plan.
