Nathan Jones wants more than one signing in January

Southampton will be looking to improve in two areas in the January transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The new man in the dugout, Nathan Jones, wants to bring in some players of his own, as he aims to preserve the Saints’ Premier League status.

What is the latest news involving Southampton?

Southampton sacked manager Ralph Hassenhuttl after a reign of just under four years at St. Mary’s Stadium last week, with Luton Town manager Jones immediately being brought in to try and salvage their season.

The 49-year-old was backed by the club, given a three-and-a-half-year contract, as he looks to instigate a turnaround of fortunes on the South Coast.

In his first game in charge, the Englishman had a baptism of fire, travelling to Anfield to test himself against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, but the Saints came up short, 3-1 losers on the day.

Despite the result, Jones stated that his team showed ‘real quality’ at times, however he will know that strengthening in the January market should give the club a better chance of avoiding relegation.

What has Dean Jones said about Southampton?

After being posed a question about what positions Southampton will want to improve during the next window in an interview with GIVEMESPORT, Jones identified two main areas:

“From what I understand, they are going to look to sign a wide forward and a striker. There’s not too much doubt that that is needed.”

As such, there is clearly a feeling at the club that the Saints are lacking in creativity, and so the aim may be to strengthen in attacking areas in order to fire themselves to safety.

Who could Southampton sign?

A potential option is versatile Toulouse forward Zakaria Aboukhlal, with Football Insider reporting that the 22-year old has impressed Southampton scouts, who watched him play earlier this season.

The Morocco international is able to play on both the left and right side of attack, so he could be a perfect option for Jones, with six goal contributions from 15 appearances in a bottom half Ligue 1 side highlighting his creative talents.

Another option is Celtic winger Jota, who Football Insider indicate has been on the radar of the Saints’ recruitment team since October, and the “special” 23-year-old has continued to display both his creative and goalscoring talents since the initial interest, registering five goals and six assists this term.
