Merlin Polzin’s Hamburg have snapped their three-match losing streak and returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 2026/27 Bundesliga’s matchday nine “curtain-raiser”. A pulsating match at Hamburger SV’s Volksparkstadion fully lived up to its billing with plenty of action and storylines. In the end, however, it is once again Gladbach who must contend with last place in the Bundesliga table after incurring their seventh defeat of the season and third loss in five fixtures under new head coach Alexander Blessin.
Both teams welcome back injured central defenders
HSV trainer Polzin was once again able to call upon the services of his de facto defensive captain. Center back Sebastiaan Bornauw was one of three changes to the XI that lined up against Eintracht Frankfurt. Bornauw replaced Jordan Torunarigha in a straight swap in the back-three. Zakaria El Ouahdi replaced Louis Lemke, with David Møller Wolfe shifting over to Lemke’s left wingback role. In attack, Patson Daka took over for Terem Moffi to spearhead the attack. On the Gladbach side, the long-injured Ko Itakura returned to the Gladbach XI for his first start since matchday four. Itakura served as Blessin’s lone change from last weekend’s goalless draw against Paderborn.
Gladbach start strong, but Muheim strikes again!
The guests certainly started the match stronger, creating three opportunities inside the opening ten minutes. Shuto Machino shot wide in the 4th while Fabio Chiarodia saw an effort blocked in the 7th. BMG keeper Daniel Batz found himself in the awkward position of having to bail out teammate Joe Scally in the 8th minute when the resurgent American committed a serious error. Scally’s blind backward header was quickly latched onto by Daka. Somehow, Batz recovered in time to ensure that Scally’s mistake didn’t prove fatal.
The action quickly swung back the other way via a Gladbach counterattack. Lukas Ullrich’s finish of a Robin Hack set-up didn’t miss wide left by much. Before 12 minutes had elapsed, however, Hamburg managed to score against the run of play. Swiss international Miro Muheim, in a scene that left all observers rubbing their eyes in disbelief, managed to top his other two sparkling distance goals of the current season with a positively absurd diamond-cutter from 30 meters out. Muheim’s powerful strike moved like a guided missile into the top right corner.
The Hanseatic hosts went up 1-0 on a serious “Goal of the Season” candidate!
Two teams exchange blows under the lights
Muheim’s goal pumped the match full of energy, and the action absolutely would not abate. Muheim, understandably, rode his fiery form and produced two more efforts before the opening half was through. Scally, meanwhile, sought redemption in the form of two shots, two assisted shots, and plenty of direct sprints into the box. Batz did well to directly parry efforts in front of his net (14th, 43rd), whilst counterpart Daniel Heuer Fernandes intervened strongly (21st) to initially prevent the Gladbach equalizer.
When the goalkeepers weren’t called upon directly, defenders Bornauw and Itakura made their respective presence felt as well with plenty of last-ditch defending. Both sides made something of a mockery of midfield with endless attacking and counterattacking sorties. The match definitely deserved another goal before the change of ends. The 1-1 finally did arrive just before it was time to head into the locker rooms. Curiously enough, in a match with plenty of highlights, it came from a totally unpolished play.
Scally earns redemption, but Itakura sees red
A poor pass from the hitherto magnificent Muheim and a poor clearance from previously reliable HSV defender Warmed Omari enabled Scally to direct an effort toward goal in the 44th minute. The rather soft shot eluded Heuer Fernandes with the help of a slight deflection off Hack’s knee. Irrespective of how fluky the equalizer seemed, Gladbach could fancy their chances in the second half with the scoreline level. Unfortunately, just four minutes after the restart, match official Sven Jablonski deemed Itakura’s challenge on Grønbaek in the 49th minute worthy of a second yellow card.
The hosts were quick to make the numerical advantage count, immediately threatening to restore the lead through several silky-smooth attacking moves involving Albert Grønbaek. Blessin attempted to reorganize defensively, replacing attacker Hack with Kevin Diks in the 56th minute. Grønbaek would nevertheless not be denied. Albert Sambi Lokonga played the Dane into the box with an exquisite ball around the hour mark. Grønbaek, unflinchingly and unselfishly, knocked the ball over to onrushing teammate Shafiq Nandja. The teenage talent then powered home the 59th-minute 2-1.
Scally misses second redemption, Grønbaek steals the show
Grønbaek kept up his fine work with the ball, strongly suggesting that he would get his name on the scoresheet before the evening was out. The next enormous opportunity still went to the shorthanded side. Bornauw gifted Scally the chance to complete a brace, and score what would have been a remarkable fifth Bundesliga goal of the relatively young season, with a terrible pass out of the back in the 66th minute. Machino collected the ball and fed Scally, who only had Bornauw to beat, but it would be the HSV returnee who redeemed himself this time with a last-second lunging block.
Four minutes later, Grønbaek effectively put a lid on proceedings with the 70th-minute 3-1. In a move that would have served as the match highlight on a night that didn’t also feature Muheim’s goal, the Dane picked up a poor clearance and blasted in his own curling distance effort from about 27 meters out. A demoralized Gladbach side naturally weren’t able to muster up much of a response over the final 20 minutes, though HSV defensive lapses in the 80th and 88th nearly helped Blessin’s men flatter the scoreline.

GGFN Bundesliga Player of the Match: Albert Grønbaek (9)
On a night featuring two extraordinary long-range goals, Hamburg’s Danish attacker Albert Grønbaek ultimately distinguished himself as the most influential player on the pitch. The 25-year-old was instrumental in breaking down Gladbach’s resistance after the interval, providing the assist for Shafiq Nandja’s 2-1 before sealing the victory with a magnificent curling effort from approximately 27 meters out.
Grønbaek’s influence extended well beyond his two direct goal contributions. The Dane registered 67 touches during his 79 minutes on the pitch, created four shooting opportunities, and accumulated an impressive 0.58 expected assists. He also attempted six dribbles and won 57 percent of his 14 contested duels, repeatedly unsettling the Gladbach defence with his movement and direct attacking play.
His attacking initiative also contributed to the dismissal of Ko Itakura, who received his second yellow card after bringing Grønbaek down in the 49th minute. The numerical advantage allowed Hamburg to impose themselves more effectively, with the Dane subsequently assuming a central role in both decisive second-half goals.
Muheim’s spectacular opener may have supplied the evening’s most memorable individual moment, but Grønbaek’s combination of creativity, attacking determination, and clinical finishing ultimately made him the standout performer in Hamburg’s return to winning ways.
