Former Man United star admits he could have joined Real Madrid

Former Manchester United star Antonio Valencia has this week opened up on an approach he received from La Liga giants Real Madrid during his playing days.

Ecuadorian icon Valencia for his part spent ten years plying his trade in the famed red of Manchester United.

Between 2009 and 2019, the explosive wide-man, who transitioned from a winger to a full-back, racked up well over 300 appearances for the Red Devils.

Prior to taking his talents to Old Trafford, though, Valencia actually had the opportunity to head to La Liga, instead. This came after Real Madrid made their interest in his signature known, whilst the South American was playing for Wigan Athletic.

Drawn on claims of Los Blancos’ interest during an interview with Diario AS this week, Valencia went on to admit:

”I did have that opportunity, yes. For me, at that time, it would have been nice, but I made the decision to go to United. Now, looking back, I’m proud, firstly that the people at Real Madrid noticed a player like me; and secondly, of the career I had at Manchester United.”
