Igor Paixao (26) wanted to remain at Olympique de Marseille this summer, despite interest from the Premier League in the form of Sunderland and Leeds United. He wanted to remain at the Vélodrome despite Marseille’s financial predicament, and despite the ownership’s desire to offload the Brazilian in order to raise much-needed funds.
Not only does Paixao want to remain at OM, he is also willing to take a pay cut, as he has told Canal Plus in an exclusive interview. OM’s management have been seeking to reduce the wage bill by negotiating new contracts on reduced terms for the players that remained. That has not been asked of Paixao, he has revealed, but he is not opposed to giving a helping hand.
“If I have to reduce my salary to help the club, it is the best thing to do… and then increase it. We just have to have a discussion and decide the best way to do that,” said the winger. Not only are Marseille in difficulty off the pitch, but it has also been a tough start to the season on it. However, Sunday night’s win over ESTAC Troyes (0-2) did at least bring an end to a five-game losing run in all competitions.
