Leipzig offer condolences to Magdeburg fan who tragically passed away during Pokal fixture

There was tragic news in the Bundesrepublik this evening as a Magdeburg fan passed away while attending the club’s cup clash with RB Leipzig.

1.FC Magdeburg’s last-16 DFB-Pokal clash with RB Leipzig this evening was eclipsed by the tragic news that one of their fans passed away during the game. 

RB Leipzig released a statement via social media alongside Magdeburg which detailed the incident as follows: 

“We had all been looking forward to a wonderful cup night under the floodlights, but it has unfortunately been overshadowed by sad news.

“We regret to inform you that the 1.FC Magdeburg fan who had to be resuscitated before the game has since passed away in hospital.

“We would like to express our sincere condolences to their family and friends and wish them strength during this difficult time.

“Out of respect for the family, we will reduce our live coverage on our club channels to a minimum. In moments like this, football takes a back seat.”

After the game, RB Leipzig coach Ole Werner also reflected on the heartbreaking turn of events and commiserated with the individual’s family. 

“Of course, when someone is being resuscitated, it completely fades into the background, and the support is understandably different.

“Unfortunately, we learned after the game that he didn’t make it. Very, very sad – our condolences to the family,” Werner added.
