West Ham United head coach Graham Potter has been handed an opportunity to lure Victor Boniface to the London Stadium in the final days of the summer transfer window after the Bayer Leverkusen star’s proposed move to Serie A heavyweights AC Milan fell through, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.
The Hammers have edged closer to improving their midfield options as a deal worth an initial £38million has been negotiated for Portugal under-21 international Mateus Fernandes, following lengthy negotiations with Championship side Southampton, while the switch will include a 15 per cent sell-on clause.
Soungoutou Magassa is also poised to join West Ham from Monaco, after a £17.2million agreement was reached earlier this week, but the east Londoners are weighing up whether to secure additional firepower ahead of Monday’s 7pm deadline after being condemned to three consecutive defeats in the early stages of the season.
Hammers are Alerted to Boniface Availability
West Ham have been offered the chance to sign Boniface in a late deal, according to GMS sources, but they will prioritise improving their options in the middle of the park before potentially turning their attention towards reaching a last-minute agreement with Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen.
The striker’s future is up in the air after he failed a medical at AC Milan last week, leading to the Italian side making a last-gasp decision to end their pursuit despite verbally agreeing an initial loan which would have included an option to make the switch permanent for close to £21million at the end of the season.
GMS sources have been informed that Boniface – who found the back of the net 11 times in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign – has been pushed in West Ham’s direction as he seeks a fresh challenge, but the east Londoners are currently focused on getting the deals for Fernandes and Magassa over the line.
Although the Nigeria international still has four years remaining on a contract which allows him to pocket close to £95,000-per-week, Bayer Leverkusen have made it clear that they are prepared to sanction his departure after initially being open to green-lighting a switch to AC Milan.
West Ham have been alerted to Boniface’s availability by intermediaries, GMS sources have learned, and a number of the capital club’s domestic counterparts have also been sounded out as he goes in search of taking his career in another direction before the fast-approaching deadline.
Potter May Make Deadline Day Boniface Move
GMS sources have been told that West Ham have considered making a move for Boniface as Potter and members of the recruitment department explored the possibility of dipping into the market for another frontman, but that has been put on the back-burner due to prioritising additions in other areas of the pitch.
The 24-year-old, who has been described as ‘world-class’ thanks to his productivity in the final third of the pitch, is open to heading to the Premier League for the first time in his career after seeing ex-teammates Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong join reigning champions Liverpool earlier in the transfer window.
West Ham will make an eleventh-hour decision on whether to lodge an offer for Boniface or another marksman on deadline day, GMS sources understand, but there have been indications that their preference is to secure a creative presence rather than an out-and-out centre forward at this stage.
GMS sources recently revealed that the Hammers are also seriously considering acquiring another goalkeeper just a matter of weeks after recruiting Mads Hermansen from Leicester City, thanks to the Denmark international failing to convince influential figures with his performances.
