Conor Benn’s 6-Word Message to Eubank Sr at Chris Eubank Jr Fight

Conor Benn wasted little time in letting Chris Eubank Sr know his true feelings after the legendary boxer made a surprise appearance to support his son, Chris Eubank Jr, during the pair’s fight on Saturday night.

The appearance of the elder Eubank at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium stunned everyone watching, both live and on television. Eubank Sr had spent weeks telling the world how much he disapproved of the bout – and also went as far as to call his son “a disgrace”. Eubank Jr had appeared to be broken by the rift and indicated that he was not on speaking terms with his father after the harsh words that had been said.

Yet the former WBO super-middleweight champion, Eubank Sr, was not only at the venue, but he was there alongside his son. In an instant, the mood around the fight changed.

Chris Sr had hardly been selling the fight in the build-up. As a result, Benn would have been justified had he been angry with the veteran fighter.

However, the 28-year-old took a different stance, with his explanation of his interaction with Eubank Sr going viral after the fight.

Benn made his feelings known to the boxing legend

Per BBC Sport, Benn revealed that he was delighted to see Eubank Sr in north London, telling him: “I’m so happy you turned up”.

Reliving the interaction in the middle of the ring before the fight, Benn explained:

“I looked at Chris Sr., and I grabbed him by the neck and said ‘mate, I’m so happy you’re here, I’m so happy you turned up’. You know because outside of everything else, outside of all the noise and promotion, and the fight, your relationship with your dad never goes. That’s always there, that’s long-standing, that’s real – without boxing?”

Benn concluded: “You know, what’s boxing? Because I’d pick the relationship with my dad over boxing any day of the week. So if this has brought them together, then that’s worth its weight in gold.”

Seeing the reconciliation was at least some solace for Benn, who lost a narrow battle via unanimous decision after 12 rounds. He had the upper hand in the early rounds before Eubank Jr turned the fight in his favour. By the final round, the two were going at it full throttle, but the Eubank clan emerged victorious, just as they did in 1990 when Chris Sr beat Nigel Benn.

The surprise and joy at seeing the two generations of Eubank on the same side was largely due to how fractured the relationship had become in recent years, even in the lead-up to Saturday’s clash. Eubank Sr criticised the organisation of a fight between fighters with a two-weight class gap (Eubank is a middleweight, while Benn had to come up from welterweight). He had publicly slated his son for his ‘egg-cracking’ antics pre-fight. His point about the fight weight proved valid as Chris Jr missed weight for the contest.

Among the reasons for their years apart were said to be the younger Eubank choosing to separate his professional career from his family and severe emotional stress caused by the tragic passing of his brother Sebastian in 2021, due to a heart attack. Yet, the relationship between father and son finally seems to be repaired – and the pair can celebrate Saturday’s victory with the bad blood pushed to one side.
