2024/25 Premier League Goalkeepers Ranked by Goals Prevented

Over the years, more and more ways to track player performances through data have emerged. One huge metric that is used at great length these days is expected goals, commonly known as xG. This is a certain form of data used to measure how good a chance is when someone takes a shot and identifies whether they should have scored it or not. On the flip side, expected goals saved effectively represents the number of goals a ‘keeper should have let in but didn’t, and therefore, how much they have over-performed when it comes to shot-stopping.

For example, if a shot has a high xG attached to it, then a keeper has done an incredible job if they manage to keep it out. On the other hand, if they fail to keep a shot out that has a low xG, then they’ve underperformed and should have made the save. Taking all of that into account, we’ve decided to bring you the results in terms of this season’s Premier League goalkeepers and with stats shared on FBref, we’ve ranked which shot-stoppers have performed the best and worst when it comes to how many expected goals they’ve saved during the 2024/25 season so far.

The lowest performers in the Premier League

The bottom two spots are occupied by Brighton’s Dutch shot-stopper, Bart Verbruggen, and Wolves’ Jose Sa, which is not the biggest surprise given the defensive struggles both sides have endured this term. And they are quite considerably behind the rest of the pack with a PSxG of -5.5 and -3.9 respectively. The three that follow are also names you might expect to see in West Ham’s Alphonse Areola, Manchester United target Aaron Ramsdale and Fulham’s Bernd Leno – the latter of which is perhaps the most eyebrow-raising thus far.

The battle for the number one spot at the Etihad means that Stefan Ortega has had more game time but has hardly pulled any strings when he has been in between the sticks. he is followed by Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric before the biggest shock arguably comes in the form of Kopa Trophy winner Emiliano Martinez, whose stats dont seem to back up his reputation as one of the best shotstoppers on the planet.

Liverpool duo Caoimhin Kelleher and Alisson Becker may be about to drape a Premier League winners’ medals come the end of the campaign, but they haven’t ranked highly in goals prevented – though that might be because the Reds just don’t give up big chances.

David Raya falls outside the top 10

Between 11th and 15th, we have some notable names, with the most high-profile being Arsenal star David Raya. The Gunners had the best defence in the league during the 23/24 season, but Raya has been up to his spell-binding heroics to the same extent this season.

Both of Newcastle’s two goalkeepers in Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka are also in the green, as is Bournemouth’s Kepa Arrizabalaga who has undergone somewhat of a career resurgence at the Vitality Stadium.

Finally, Everton’s Jordan Pickford just misses out on the top 10, which has been pivotal for the Toffees. The Goodison Park outfit have riutinely struggled for goals so for their number one to keep a tight ship at the back has been key in ensuring they haven’t slipped further into trouble.

Andre Onana and the Premier League’s oldest player make the top 10

The top 10 is where most would imagine we start seeing some of the bigger names, but instead, there are some rather modest players who have been excelling this term. At 10th is Alex Palmer, who scrapes in with eight games that have seen him prevent 1.2 goals for the Tractor Boys. Lukasz Fabianski, currently the oldest player in the division at 39 years and 11 months old, comes in seventh with +2.0 . Most athletes nearing their 40s would be considering retirement, but the Pole continues to be relied upon by the Hammers.

In between those two sit two of the most criticised goalkeepers in the division. Manchester United’s Andre Onana was recently dropped due to the accumulation of his errors, but he sits in a respectable ninth. Meanwhile, Robert Sanchez finds himself one place ahead despite Chelsea fans desperately calling for him to be removed. Brentford’s Mark Flekken also misses out on the top five following a stellar season for the Dutchman.

Dean Henderson features in the top three

Leicester City might have already condemned themselves to relegation, but Mads Hermansen will no doubt be fielding calls from more top flight teams as the young goalkeeper finds himself in fifth after a brilliant individual campaign. He is followed by Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels who has been incredible in the Garibaldi’s rise to potential Champions League football.

Ederson at one point looked set for the chopping block, but the stats show just how important he has continued to be at the Etihad. The Brazilian is one of the most unorthodox players in Premier League history, with his ‘sweeper-keeper’ style completely revolutionising what is expected from those between the sticks.

Dean Henderson’s sensational form at Crystal Palace has not gone unnoticed this season. The Englishman once had the tendency to be a little too erratic and emotional, but has morphed into a mature goalkeeper who produces the goods time and time again. If the Eagles want to win the FA Cup, they are going to need this man at his very best.

Guglielmo Vicario is showing no signs of second-season syndrome, continuing where he left off in his debut campaign for Tottenham. The Italian was a major miss when injured and, given how leaky Ange Postecoglou’s defence has been, it perhaps isn’t surprising to know that he has had to show just how good he is on more than one occasion this season.
