New Barcelona signing Wojciech Szczęsny has on Thursday forwarded a public message of support to new teammate Iñaki Peña.
This, of course, comes ahead of an impending battle between the pair for no.1 duties in Hansi Flick’s squad.
Veteran shot-stopper Szczęsny put pen to paper on terms in Catalunya’s capital last week, brought in as a free agent on the back of the long-term injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen.
The former Arsenal and Juventus man is currently lacking in match sharpness, having not completed a pre-season with any club, meaning the aforementioned Iñaki Peña continued between the posts for Barcelona this past weekend.
Once the former is back in peak condition, however, competition will be fierce to secure first-choice duties.
Speaking during an interview with Mundo Deportivo on Thursday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of as much was put to Wojciech Szczęsny himself.
In his response, however, the Pole was eager to reiterate that his ‘priority’ remains to aid teammate Peña:
“Iñaki Peña? He has been playing very well. I made it clear to him that my main priority at the moment is to help him, because I’m not ready to play, I was on holiday for two months and I need time to be able to guarantee a level to represent the shirt. My priority is to help him.”
