When Bayern Munich signed Eric Dier on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January, there was uncertainty surrounding whether the former England international would be of the standard to keep Der Rekordmeister in the Bundesliga title race.
While Thomas Tuchel’s side would ultimately succumb to the dominance of Bayer Leverkusen, Dier was one of the least problematic performers in the squad, often being the most reliable of Tuchel’s backline.
However, since Vincent Kompany has taken over in Bavaria, the Englishman has only featured once for the record champions—a nine-minute cameo against VfL Wolfsburg on matchday one.
As it stands, it is unlikely that Dier will, therefore, receive a new deal at the Allianz Arena, with his contract set to expire this summer.
Nevertheless, speaking to Bild about whether the 30-year-old still has a future at the club, Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, commented: “He trains really well and is a complete professional. We are very happy to have him. We will still need him!”
With Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae Kompany’s preferred centre-back duo, Dier will have to settle for fewer minutes, but with the Champions League campaign set to start this week, the Englishman could benefit from squad rotation.
