£72m star now ‘one to watch’ at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea could become an option for Frenkie de Jong if he decides to leave Barcelona, Fabrizio Romano has informed GiveMeSport.

The transfer expert says the Blues wanted the midfielder in the summer but, despite interest from both them and Manchester United, he ended up staying at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Transfer news – Frenkie de Jong

De Jong has once again been linked with a move to the Premier League. According to BBC Sport, United could make a move for the 25-year-old in 2023.

It would not be their first time trying to sign De Jong. The Red Devils, of course, made an offer for him during the last transfer window.

In fact, a report from Sky Sports states that United and Barcelona had actually agreed a £72m deal. It also claims that Chelsea were willing to pay the same fee. The player, however, did not want to leave the Camp Nou.

“I wanted to stay at Barcelona and my opinion didn’t change,” De Jong told ESPN. “That’s why I stayed calm because I knew what I wanted.”

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Frenkie de Jong and Chelsea?

If De Jong decides he wants to leave Barcelona in the future, Romano says you cannot rule out Chelsea being a potential destination for the Dutchman.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “Let’s remember, last summer, Chelsea also wanted him – not just Manchester United. So I would always keep an eye on Chelsea for Frenkie de Jong in case he changes his mind one day.”

Does Graham Potter need Frenkie de Jong?

All things considered, Potter could probably really do with the arrival of a new midfielder like De Jong.

Denis Zakaria did join the west London club during the summer to strengthen them in the middle of the park, but he is only at Stamford Bridge on a loan deal and has failed to make a single Premier League appearance so far.

Potter does have N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, of course, but both players are out of contract next summer, while the former has also been injured for most of the campaign.

When you consider all of that, it would hardly be a shock if Potter and Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly made signing a new midfielder a priority.

With De Jong clearly loving life at Barcelona at the minute, though, the Blues may have to look elsewhere if they want to strengthen their midfield.
