£35m star ‘will be paid handsomely’ at Elland Road

Leeds United ‘have no choice’ but to offer Jack Harrison a major pay increase in a bid to keep the fan favourite at Elland Road, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Whites spent close to £100million bolstering their squad during the summer transfer window, but they have now set their sights on ensuring one of their key men will remain in Yorkshire.

What’s the latest news involving Harrison?

According to Football Insider, Leeds are preparing to offer Harrison a lucrative new contract which would see him earn double his current salary.

The report suggests the Whites are ready to head to the negotiating table and willing to put a major wage increase on the table as they look to tie the former England under-21 international down to fresh terms.

Harrison has entered the final two years of his £60,000-per-week contract, leading to question marks over his long-term future.

Leeds were desperate to hold onto the winger after he attracted interest during the summer transfer window and reportedly set a £35million price tag.

Harrison is expected to feature prominently on Newcastle United’s wishlist in January, having failed with two separate bids earlier this year, while Tottenham Hotspur have also been admirers.

What has Dean Jones said about Harrison?

Jones understands that Leeds are insistent that Harrison is not available and, as a result, they want to fend off suitors by tying him down to a new contract.

The transfer insider believes the winger’s performances, along with the ongoing interest in his services, means the Whites will have to hand the 25-year-old a considerable pay increase.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “He has been pursued by a host of clubs this year and Leeds have remained adamant he would not be leaving.

“With that in mind, they have no choice but to reflect that sentiment by paying him more handsomely. He is seen as a really important player in the squad.”

Is Harrison deserving of a pay increase?

Having joined Leeds on a permanent basis last year following a succession of loan spells from Manchester City, there is no doubt that Harrison has been one of the Yorkshire giants’ star performers.

He played a leading role in Jesse Marsch, who was appointed as the Whites’ head coach in February, maintaining the club’s Premier League status last term.

Only Raphinha scored more top flight goals than Harrison as Leeds staved off relegation to the Championship on the final day of the season.

The wide-man has also been an attacking threat during the early stages of the 2022/23 campaign, chalking up assists in each of the opening three fixtures and scoring in the win over Chelsea, so Harrison deserves recognition for his efforts.
