2023: A year to forget for Germany

After a 2-0 defeat against Austria on Tuesday night, it’s been a year to forget for Germany. According to Opta, Germany’s six defeats equals the associations negative record (2018) – the only time they’ve lost as many games in a single calendar year.

Germany have now lost games against Belgium, Poland, Colombia, Japan, Turkey and Austria in 2023, which doesn’t bode well considering they’re hosting the European Championship next summer.

Germany far from convincing ahead of Euro 2024

Not only that, Germany looked convincing in their win against France under Rudi Völler but looked less so in their wins against Peru and the USA. Die Mannschaft also picked up draws against Ukraine and Mexico.

In his four games as head coach, Julian Nagelsmann is yet to find his preferred lineup. Against Turkey and Austria, the former Bayern Munich coach started Arsenal’s Kai Havertz at left-back, which could become a thing in the national setup.

And although Ilkay Gündogan is a nailed-on starter at Euro 2024, Nagelsmann has tested Leon Goretzka, Pascal Groß and Joshua Kimmich alongside the Barcelona midfielder, while Robert Andrich has also featured and Grischa Prömel was called-up to the national team for the first time.

Just months out of Euro 2024, it’s a worrying time for Germany.
