£200k-a-week star’s future ‘will be discussed’ at Old Trafford – GiveMeSport

Manchester United star Harry Maguire’s future ‘will be discussed in the summer’ after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag added Jack Butland, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer to his squad last month, but there is likely to be further incomings and outgoings when the window reopens.

Man United transfer news – Harry Maguire

According to the Daily Star, Maguire will consider making a summer exit if he is unable to convince ten Hag that he deserves to be reinstated to Manchester United’s best XI.

The report suggests the central defender turned down a loan move to Inter Milan during the final days of the January transfer window, but the Serie A giants could return to the negotiating table at the end of the season.

Manchester United also turned down an enquiry from Premier League rivals West Ham United last month, with ten Hag insisting he would be remaining at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth recently told GiveMeSport that the England international would not be on his way out despite gaining interest.

But it has been revealed that Manchester United will consider offers for Maguire in the summer as ten Hag looks to continue his squad overhaul.

What has Dean Jones said about Maguire?

Jones believes Maguire is set to hold discussions with the Manchester United hierarchy and ten Hag over his long-term future at the end of the season.

The journalist understands the 29-year-old will be coveted by various Premier League clubs when the transfer window reopens, but a move to Serie A may be beneficial.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “I think Maguire’s future will be discussed in the summer.

“I think that, to be honest, Italy is almost the perfect place for him to head to next.

“There will be interest in him in the Premier League as well, there’s not any doubt about that. I know there will be.”

Should Maguire leave Man United in the summer?

There is no doubt that Maguire’s game-time has been restricted by ten Hag as, according to Transfermarkt, he has only been afforded 383 minutes of Premier League action this season.

The Manchester United captain still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his £200,000-per-week contract and it would make business sense to move him on if he is not one of the first names on the team-sheet, particularly when he is on such a lucrative pay package.

Maguire has been handed an average match rating of 6.50 by WhoScored this term, which is bettered by fellow central defenders Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof in Premier League encounters.

That emphasises why ten Hag has regularly overlooked the former Leicester City man, who joined Manchester United in an £80million deal in 2019.

But Sofascore statistics show Maguire averaged 3.6 clearances and 1.4 tackles per World Cup outing last year, so there is no doubt that he will have plenty of takers if he is made available for transfer.
