£113k-a-week duo now likely to stay at St James’s Park

Newcastle United duo Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis may stay at St James’s Park beyond the transfer deadline, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has informed GIVEMESPORT.

The Magpies have been active under Eddie Howe during this window, completing deals to acquire Anthony Gordon, Garang Kuol and Harrison Ashby to strengthen their push for the top four.

Newcastle Transfer News – Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis

Earlier this month, 90Min revealed that Everton were keen on signing out-of-favour Newcastle United man Fraser before the end of the window.

The Scotland international, who earns around £63,000 at St James’s Park per week is said to be free to leave the Magpies before the deadline; nevertheless, there is no clear indication yet where his future lies in the final hours of the window.

Despite one report claiming that Fraser was in talks with Hull City over a potential move, BBC Sport journalist Mike White has since denied that the Tigers are looking to strike a deal for the 28-year-old.

In the case of £50,000 per week man Lewis, The Athletic detailed last month that there was interest from several Championship clubs in the defender. However, nothing has appeared in the media since to suggest an exit from the North East is on the horizon for the 25-year-old.

What has Keith Downie said about Fraser and Lewis?

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie believes expects both Fraser and Lewis to still be Newcastle players come the close of play.

Downie told GMS: “Well, I think Ryan Fraser could be one that was available to go. I feel, honestly, with the fact that they’ve lost Shelvey, they didn’t expect to lose Shelvey, so I think I think, no, unless the deal was really good for the club.

“The Shelvey deal was good for the club. It was good for the player as well. Unless something like that comes in, I think the likes of Fraser and Lewis might end up staying now.”

What now for Fraser and Lewis at Newcastle United?

With no exit path seemingly forthcoming for either player, it looks as if they will now see out the rest of this term at St James’s Park before re-evaluating their futures at the club in the summer.

The pair have made only 11 appearances combined for the Toon this season, as per Transfermarkt, falling well down the pecking order in their respective positions in the North East.

Even as a sporadic squad player, being part of this Newcastle United team for a little bit longer won’t do either of them much harm.

Potentially, both Fraser and Lewis could have an EFL Cup winners medal and a top-four finish to show for their efforts before being able to review their options in a few months.
