£103m star ‘will be joining’ next summer at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea‘s deal to sign RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku is “basically done”, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

While the transfer window is currently closed, the west London club have been working on bringing the Frenchman to Stamford Bridge, and Jacobs fully expects him to be in blue next summer.

What is the latest news involving Nkunku?

Nkunku recently picked up a bad injury while training with the France squad, ruling him out of the World Cup.

As per The Sun, the 25-year-old could now be sidelined for up to eight weeks in a blow to both club and country.

Nkunku’s injury does not look to have deterred Chelsea, though, who are in the process of trying to sign the France international.

According to multiple outlets, including The Telegraph, he has already had a medical with the club ahead of his proposed move to west London.

What has Jacobs said about Nkunku to Chelsea?

Jacobs has told GIVEMESPORT that Nkunku, who is valued at around £103m by the CIES Football Observatory, should be a Chelsea player for the 2023/24 season.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “Nkunku, that deal is basically done for the summer of 2023, so Nkunku is going to come in in the summer.”

Will Nkunku be enough for Chelsea?

Not a chance. Their squad will still need a lot of work after his arrival, and the Premier League table shows that.

Graham Potter’s side currently find themselves in eighth, which is obviously not good enough for a club of Chelsea’s stature.

They have had a lot of fitness problems, of course, with the likes of Reece James and N’Golo Kante both picking up injuries this season. But that is exactly why the Blues need more additions on top of Nkunku.

Now 33 years of age, Cesar Azpilicueta is no longer in his prime, so you have to question if he is adequate cover for James. When you look at Chelsea’s squad, there is also not really a like-for-like alternative to Kante, an elite ball-winning midfielder.

As per FBref, the France international has ranked in the 88th percentile for tackles, the 87th for interceptions and the 89th for blocks among his positional peers over the last year. It is no wonder, then, that the Blues are struggling so much without him this term.

Ultimately, if Chelsea want to get back to where they once were, challenging for Premier League titles, then they are going to need more than just Christopher Nkunku.
