Xabi Alonso has worked wonders since taking over as Bayer Leverkusen coach in October 2022, leading Die Werkself from the bottom of the table to first place.

As a result, the Spaniard has attracted the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs, and that doesn’t surprise Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka, who knows that the successful coach is likely to take the next step at some point.

“As long as he’s here, we’ll enjoy it. The day will come when he might want to move on, but that’s normal in football,” Xhaka told Sky Germany.

“I don’t have the feeling at the moment that his mind is elsewhere. We see it every day – he runs almost more than we do in training. He gives us that hunger that he has, that feeling of wanting to win. And of course we try to give that back to him,” he added.

Bayer Leverkusen are currently seven points clear of Bayern Munich, who have a game in hand.

But despite the gap to the German champions, Leverkusen haven’t started talking about the prospect of winning the title in the dressing room, according to Xhaka.

“There is no talk of the title at all,” he stressed.
