Xavi Hernandez is commonly heralded as one of the greatest midfielders to have played the game. He was Barcelona’s record appearance maker before going on to end his career at Al Sadd in Qatar. But in a recent interview given to Cronache di Spogliatoio (via calciomercato.com), he revealed that he was close to playing in Italy twice in his career.
The first instance was back in 1999 when he starred in the U-20 World Cup, taking Spain to victory. Milan were very interested in the then 19-year-old but he decided to stay at Barcelona, having come through La Masia. Then again in 2008, Xavi was close to signing for Inter by his own admission but then Pep Guardiola joined Barcelona as the manager and changed everything.
Xavi is a manager himself now, having won La Liga with Barcelona a few years back. Right now, he is not with any club and would surely have been in the considerations of both the Nerrazzuri and the Rossoneri as they changed managers in the summer.
