In the hours leading up to Sunday’s WWE Clash in Paris Premium Live Event, reports began to circulate that the company had a major surprise in store for the ending of the main event. The headline match in the French capital saw Seth Rollins defend his World Heavyweight Championship against CM Punk, LA Knight and Jey Uso in a Fatal Four Way match.
Rollins is typically flanked by his stablemates in ‘The Vision’, namely Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed. However, none of the trio were in the building by the time Rollins walked out to defend his gold at the Paris La Defense Arena.
Heyman had been taken out by Roman Reigns earlier in the evening, while Breakker and Reed were barred from the arena following their own vicious attack on ‘The OTC’ – which looks to have ruled the fan favourite out for a significant period of time.
Among those mentioned as being in the running to make a surprise appearance at the show was The Rock. The Hollywood star was spotted in Italy earlier in the weekend, just a few short hours away from Paris. There was, though, no sign of ‘The Final Boss’ during the main event.
Instead, Becky Lynch made her presence felt in the headline contest, low-blowing CM Punk to help her husband defend his championship. While the pair have referenced each other in promos on many occasions, Clash in Paris marks the first time that they have been associated on-screen since 2019.
WWE has resisted the temptation to have the couple team up since then, even though both have been heels since the night after WrestleMania 41. While the pairing makes complete sense logically, WWE fans are convinced that there’s a deeper reasoning behind the storyline – and it’s linked to a Superstar that hasn’t been seen in WWE for more than 10 years.
Fans Demand Return of One WWE Superstar to Help CM Punk After Clash in Paris
Once one of the most popular female performers in WWE, AJ Lee hasn’t appeared in the company – or wrestled a match – since the night after WrestleMania 31 in March 2015. The real-life wife of CM Punk, AJ left WWE amid much tension between the promotion and her husband after Punk walked out in early 2014.
When the Chicago native ended his WWE exile after almost a decade in November 2023, speculation almost immediately began about a potential return for AJ. For as desperate as fans have been to see her again, there has never been any sign of her returning – until Sunday night.
From the moment that Lynch teamed up with Rollins to screw Punk over, comments began to appear on social media suggesting that the finish had been devised to set up a comeback for AJ – backing up her man in a tag-team feud against “The Man’ and ‘The Visionary’.
“Nah, AJ Lee gotta come back now. I’m sorry it’s not even an option,” declared one fan. “AJ Lee is finally coming back, for sure,” another confidently predicted.
“Why else would they have Becky intefere in the match? That’s gotta be the direction,” argued a third poster, with a fourth writing: “If that ending isn’t teasing this, I don’t know what we’re doing!”
A final fan made a particularly passionate statement, as they insisted: “If this doesn’t result in a return from AJ Lee, Triple H needs to be thrown in federal prison!”
Thankfully, it appears that ‘The Game’ will avoid jail time, as WWE’s own broadcast team made several references to AJ during the Clash in Paris Post Show. Beloved Superstar Big E was first to present the possibility. The former New Day member pointed out:
“This man, CM Punk, he’s got a wife, too – and I’ve known her to kick some ass!”
If there was any doubt over who Big E was referring to, his co-host Jackie Redmond quickly removed it: “Are you saying this opens a certain door to, maybe, AJ Lee. I’m saying it!”
According to a report from Fightful Select, “AJ has been brought up in numerous pitches internally as of late”, although it should be noted that no deal is confirmed to have been agreed for the New Jersey native’s return.
