Back in January, Atletico Madrid completed one of the most exciting deals of the 2023-24 season by acquiring Arthur Vermeeren from Royal Antwerp. There was plenty of fanfare surrounding the 19-year-old midfielder, although it’s safe to say that his start to life at Los Colchoneros has not been ideal.
Vermeeren made only five appearances (two starts) in four months, despite being fit and available throughout. This caused bewilderment among Atleti supporters, although the player himself understand why he was so under-utilised by Simeone, as per MD.
“I knew there was a chance I wouldn’t play much. Even knowing that, I would make the exact same decision 100%. I knew was a signing for the future.
“I also signed for six years, it was planned. Of course, I expected to play more, but I have to accept the coach’s decision, and show in training that I deserve more playing time.”
Next season should be better for Vermeeren, as he now has more time under his belt as an Atletico Madrid player. There’s no doubt that his time will come.
