Wolverhampton Wanderers have ‘put themselves in an awkward situation’ after deciding to keep Steve Davis in interim charge at Molineux, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The West Midlands side are in the Premier League’s relegation zone and just one point clear of bottom side Nottingham Forest, but they remain without a permanent boss.
What’s the latest news involving Davis?
Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has confirmed that Davis will remain at the helm until 2023, having seen improvements on the pitch and members of the squad responding well to his methods.
The 57-year-old has been in the dugout since Bruno Lage was sacked, following a woeful run of form, last month.
Wolves have also opted against rushing into an appointment after Queens Park Rangers head coach Michael Beale turned down an approach from Molineux.
But Davis, who has previously been in charge of the likes of Leyton Orient and Crewe Alexandra in the Football League, has struggled to guide Wolves away from danger.
He has led his boyhood club to four points from five fixtures, with a solitary win coming against Nottingham Forest.

What has Dean Jones said about the situation?
Jones was shocked to see Wolves put out a club statement confirming that Davis will remain in his current role until after the World Cup, which gets underway in Qatar later this month.
However, the journalist believes the hierarchy are still working around the clock to find an ideal long-term successor to Lage.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I was very surprised that they took the stance to publicly state that they will have an interim manager for the rest of this period of the season.
“It seems unnecessary to me because they have put themselves in an awkward situation, but I’m sure, behind the scenes, that they are planning on making a replacement.”
Who could be named as Wolves’ new head coach?
Having dismissed Lage, it is understood that Julen Lopetegui was quickly identified as Wolves’ top target after a shortlist of candidates was compiled by the hierarchy.
Although the Spaniard turned down the opportunity to move into the Molineux hot seat, citing family reasons, the Premier League strugglers could still hold further discussions over the coming weeks and see whether his mindset alters.
According to The Sun, Wolves are set to launch a fresh move for Lopetegui after buying themselves more time by keeping Davis in interim charge.
The report suggests the club are homing in on the former Sevilla boss, who has also enjoyed spells in charge of Spain and Real Madrid.
