Chelsea have announced the signing of Strasbourg captain Emanuel Emegha (22) last week. The Dutchman’s transfer from La Meinau to Stamford Bridge is not surprising in itself, given Emegha’s form since his 2023 transfer from Sturm Graz. But the timing of the announcement has left many Strasbourg fans furious.
Emegha was booed during last week’s Ligue 1 game between Strasbourg and Le Havre. RCSA head coach Liam Rosenior condemned the reaction following the game. “Emmanuel Emegha was devastated, and I was too. I am very disappointed by what I saw. Seeing banners against one of last season’s best players is unacceptable.”
According to L’Equipe, the pre-agreement for Emegha’s 2026 signing to Chelsea has been announced earlier than anticipated, just in case the two BlueCo-owned clubs were to take part in the same European competition during the 2026-2027 season, which would have made the transfer illegal. The outlet adds that Newcastle United and Juventus were interested in the Strasbourg striker.
Furthermore, in securing a move to a major Premier League club, Emegha’s status has changed, which could play in his hands given the Dutchman hopes to land a berth in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup.
