Why Antonio Conte is key to Rasmus Hojlund’s Napoli redemption

Serie A side Napoli picked up a 2-1 win over Genoa and the result came because of Rasmus Højlund’s second-half winner.

The Dane’s goal came days after he grabbed a brace against Sporting in the Champions League, helping his new side to their first win in the competition.

These goals came right after manager Antonio Conte spoke about why he is taking responsibility of bringing the best out of Napoli’s summer signing from Manchester United. While few managers say that out loud about a player, Conte’s words showed that he has a plan for Højlund.

Clearly, it is working out. That isn’t just because he has four goals in all competitions, but because the system benefits him.

Unlike how it was at Manchester United, Højlund constantly has support around him. Napoli’s setup, since last season, is focused on overloading the centre of the pitch. Last season, there were less dilemmas to be worried about. This season has brought Kevin de Bruyne to Naples.

The Belgian is a creative force – as evident in the last two games. His presence does impact Scott McTominay negatively and takes away his goals, but it helps Højlund a lot. The Denmark international is constantly on the last man, trying to sneak in-behind onto the balls threaded through by De Bruyne.

Of course, McTominay plays a slightly more focused role on the ball but Conte is adept at tailoring his system to suit his best players.

He did that last season with the Scotland international and now, he is doing it with Højlund.
