UFC Star Makes Shock Claim About Khamzat Chimaev’s Future

Although Khamzat Chimaev has been looked at as one of, if not the most dominant force in all of MMA since he made his UFC debut back in 2020, the Chechen, according to many MMA fans, fighters and analysts, is yet to fulfil his potential inside the Octagon.

Chimaev will fight in his first-ever UFC title fight next month at UFC 319 against reigning UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis, however, if it wasn’t for his problems outside of the Octagon related to health issues and inability to get into the United States in recent years, Chimaev would’ve probably fought for a title a long time ago.

Despite Chimaev starting his UFC career off by competing in three fights in just two months, in the last four years, his activity has been knocked, mainly due to being plagued with unfortunate and serious health issues. The undefeated powerhouse’s future in MMA was rumoured to be in doubt a few years ago due to his health problems, and during a recent interview with MMA Today, one of Chimaev’s middleweight rivals, Caio Borralho, insinuated that once again, his MMA future is in serious doubt.

Khamzat Chimaev Could Retire if He Wins the UFC Middleweight Title at UFC 319

Caio Borralho believes Chimaev’s health issues could put him into an early retirement

Khamzat Chimaev

Despite being just 31 years old and one of, if not the most dominant fighter in all of MMA, Khamzat Chimaev’s career in fighting may be on the verge of ending. According to Chimaev’s fellow UFC middleweight title contender, Caio Borralho, if the Chechen can defeat Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 and win the UFC middleweight title, he may call time on his MMA career.

Borralho said the following to MMA Today:

“I heard somewhere, some people saying that if he wins the belt, he’s gonna retire.

There’s some little talks, some whispers about that. If he wins the belt, he retires. I’m not sure of that. I don’t know if I believe that or not, but it’s an option. There’s too much pressure on him. Health problems and a lot of pressure from his country.”

Although the news of Chimaev’s potential retirement has been met with shock by MMA fans on social media, since his battles with health issues started in 2021, ‘Borz’ has publicly teased retirement several times, so the news of him potentially calling time on his career if he can finally become a champion at UFC 319 should not really come as a huge surprise.

Chimaev may be a sizeable betting favourite at UFC 319, however, he is certainly not guaranteed to walk out of Chicago victorious, as he is coming up against du Plessis, who is one of the most awkward yet effective fighters in all of MMA right now.
