It’s been almost two years since INEOS completed their deal to buy a minority stake in Manchester United, and the changes they have implemented on the club are clear to see.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the face of the project and several new faces have been brought in behind the scenes to fix the football operations, with the Glazer family being sidelined and simply claiming their financial rewards.
But it has now emerged that a deal is ‘advanced’ for a new investor to come in at Old Trafford, and it must surely be a trigger for fans to push for the Glazers to move on for good.
Deal ‘Advanced’ for New Investor at Man Utd
On Wednesday night, Saudi sports chief Turki Alalshikh revealed on his X account that he had been told that Man Utd were at an ‘advanced stage’ to sell the club to a new investor.
There has been no confirmation or retraction since, and that means the fans will be clinging to hope that it’s true. But whether it is or isn’t, this is a chance for the ‘Glazers Out’ brigade to dust off their banners and get back to calling for them to sell their stake in the club.
Currently, the Americans own 69% of the club’s shares, but their voting rights mean they have 97% of the voting shares, effectively meaning they can make all the decisions with the club. Part of the deal with Ratcliffe, however, saw them surrender control of the football operations.
INEOS have had their own questionable decisions since being in charge, but they are clearly trying to implement a vision that they have for the club.
It’s unclear who the new investor would be, but they surely can’t be worse than the Glazers are. This is a family who bought the club on borrowed money, plunged it into over £1bn worth of debt, didn’t put a penny into the club, and then took hundreds of millions out of the club for their own benefit.
There is no benefit to them being in charge, and if new owners are coming in, then it must be at their expense if the football club is to return to its former glory.
The calls for the Glazers to leave have never gone away. Fans have always called for a full sale when it was initially mentioned years ago, and they weren’t happy when INEOS only secured a minority investment. The feeling around the club would only improve if this new investment was confirmed, with the Glazers never to be seen again at Old Trafford.
