Tottenham Hotspur complete the signing of Timo Werner

Tottenham Hotspur have announced the arrival of Timo Werner from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig on a short-term loan deal until the end of the season.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, subject to international clearance,” a statement on Tottenham’s official website read.

“The Germany international will join the club on loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the deal permanent in the summer. He will wear the number 16 shirt.”

Spurs have the option to sign Werner for €17 million should they choose to retain his services on a permanent basis.

The 27-year-old will be expected to lead the line in the absence of Heung-min Son, who is on international duty with South Korea ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup.

Off the back of a tough spell with Chelsea between 2020 and 2022, Werner will be keen to enjoy an improved second stint in English football as he looks to get his career back on track, with a place in the Germany squad for EURO 2024 currently looking out of reach.

The striker found game time hard to come by for Leipzig this term, making just two Bundesliga starts before leaving for Tottenham.

Werner could make his debut for Ange Postecoglou’s side in Sunday’s heavyweight clash against Manchester United and has the chance to endear himself to the Spurs faithful in next to no time.

Tottenham sit fifth in the Premier League and remain firmly in contention for a place in the top four, while the North Londoners also have a shot at silverware in the FA Cup, where they will take on defending champions Manchester City in the fourth round.
