Football never sleeps. During any of the 86400 seconds in a 24-hour day, somewhere in the world someone is doing something related to the beautiful game, whether that’s scoring a last-minute winner in a high-profile match, posting their expert take on social media or simply booting a ball against a wall with their mates.
It’s therefore impossible for any human being to keep up with everything that’s going on in the game, and it’s often those little yet most intriguing moments, like a fan’s alternative viewpoint of a penalty save, or a three-second yet incredibly telling interaction between two arch-rivals, or thread on X explaining why N’Golo Kante is the nicest man in professional sport, which make football so great.
GIVEMESPORT have created our live blog to help solve that problem, providing the best social media has to offer and the greatest football mini-stories from the last 24 hours.
13th April: Andrew Robertson Loses it With Virgil van Dijk
Scored own goal vs West Ham
Liverpool star Andrew Robertson could not hide his emotions as a mix-up between him and club captain Virgil van Dijk led to West Ham netting an equaliser at Anfield. Hoping to move another step closer to their Premier League title, the Reds were leading 1-0 at home until the 86th minute
A low cross into the box caused chaos and the Scottish defender deflected the ball into his own net, with Van Dijk also culpable as they both stretched to deal with the danger. Robertson was visibly furious as he screamed and gestured wildly at his teammate.
Thankfully for Liverpool, their club captain more than made up for his mistake as he would head home a winner in the 2-1 victory, scoring from a corner just three minutes later.
12th April: Cristiano Ronaldo Scores Sensational Volley For Al-Nassr
Portuguese superstar nets brace to move onto 933 professional goals
Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer the beautiful game has ever seen. Not only efficient in front of goal but capable of the outrageous too, the 40-year-old thundered in an incredible first-time volley for Al-Nassr against Al-Riyadh in a 2-1 triumph.
The ball fell into his path on the edge of the penalty area, and Ronaldo swiped his right foot towards the ball. What happened next was marvellous as the ball thundered past the goalkeeper – who was rooted to the spot. Footage captured the strike from the stands, and it’s a thing of beauty. Watch below:
12th April: David Raya Forced Into Kit Change For Arsenal vs Brentford
Eagle-eyed supporters tuning into Arsenal’s home clash against Brentford on Saturday evening will have noticed something strange about the Spaniard’s appearance. The goalkeeper is usually kitted out in a full ‘volt’ greenish yellowish strip, but was seen wearing black shorts and socks against the Bees.
This was due to the apparent kit clash between Raya’s socks and those of the visiting team. One supporter wasn’t best pleased with this decision, saying: “We’re the home team, they should’ve had to change their socks,” while another wasn’t a fan of the look: “Not liking the volt kit with the black shorts on Raya…. smh.”
12th April: Darren Cann Looked ‘Emotional’ During Man City 5-2 Crystal Palace
Was officiating his final professional match
While there was plenty of drama on the pitch during Manchester City’s 5-2 win over Crystal Palace, there was an emotional story taking place alongside all the action. Indeed, experienced linesman Darren Cann was officiating his final game before retiring.
He has overseen more than 1,000 professional matches and represented England in 140 international fixtures, including two World Cups. After all his years, he is understood to have officiated the most football matches in the history of the Premier League.
Ironically, in his final game, it was also the first game semi-automated offside technology was being used in the English top-flight. Characteristically, Cann got through the game without any drama.
A full-time, he looked emotional as players, such as Kevin De Bruyne, shook his hand for one final time. TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher noted: “He looks emotional down there, he’s retiring today and we wish him well in whatever he does.”
11th April: Ola Aina’s Reaction to Mo Salah Signing New Liverpool Deal
Aina was recording on Snapchat when the news broke
After months of speculation about his future, Mohamed Salah signed a new contract at Liverpool on Friday morning. The Egyptian forward, who only had two months to run on his previous deal, has extended his stay at the club until 2027.
The news isn’t great for defenders around the Premier League, including Nottingham Forest right-back Ola Aina. The former Chelsea youngster was recording on Snapchat when news of Salah’s new contract broke. Reacting to the news, he said:
“The league is finished! Everyone is in trouble! He actually signed on. He signed on again!”
11th April: Rayan Cherki Can’t Help But Aim Dig at Onana After Lyon 2-2 Man Utd
The goalkeeper seems to have annoyed the entire Lyon squad and fan base
Andre Onana wasn’t a popular man in Lyon last night. The Manchester United goalkeeper was given a hostile reception after a back-and-forth war of words with ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic. The issue arose when Onana claimed his team were ‘way better’ than the Ligue 1 outfit.
Those comments didn’t go down particularly well within the Lyon camp, and Rayan Cherki – who equalised in the dying moments after Onana’s second mistake of the game – fired back at the shot-stopper in his post-match interview. The French youngster said:
“We were much better than them (Manchester United).
“We know they are a good team, but we have never been afraid of them and we will never be afraid of them. 2nd leg? We will go there to attack.”
10th April: Andre Onana Gifts Lyon a Lead vs Man Utd After Controversial Week
The shot-stopper conceded directly from a crossed free-kick
Andre Onana made a lot of noise in the build-up to Manchester United’s trip to Lyon in the Europa League. The Red Devils’ shot-stopper was involved in a war of words with ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who now plies his trade in France.
After receiving a hostile reception from the home supporters on Thursday evening, Onana gifted the Ligue 1 outfit the lead with a huge blunder inside the opening 30 minutes. Thiago Almada floated in a free-kick, but everyone in the penalty area missed the ball, and the Cameroonian ‘keeper failed to react quickly enough.
10th April: Hugo Ekitike Nets Stunning Goal vs Spurs Amid PL Links
The French forward is being watched by some huge clubs
Ange Postecoglou has one remaining opportunity to deliver the silverware he claimed to guarantee in his second season at Tottenham. However, Spurs’ chances in the UEFA Europa League took a hit as Frankfurt took an early lead in the two-legged quarter-final.
Hugo Ekitike – who has been linked with several Premier League clubs – fired in an early goal from long range to silence the home crowd inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Frenchman cut inside Pedro Porro and curled the ball into the far corner – leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
10th April: Andre Onana Given Hostile Reception by Lyon Fans
The Man United goalkeeper came face-to-face with supporters prior to kick-off
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was given a less than welcome reception from Lyon ‘ultras’ ahead of the two teams meeting in the Europa League quarter-final. The Cameroonian made headlines in the week for claiming that the Red Devils were by far the stronger of the two teams, before exchanging words with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who described Onana as the worst goalkeeper in the club’s history.
Prior to kick-off, cameras caught Onana walking up to the goal in front of the Lyon fans to check the net, as he was serenaded with aggressive chants and whistling, all while the 29-year-old smirked at the situation.
10th April: Matty Cash Interviewed by His Sister After PSG 3-1 Villa
Matty Cash started for Aston Villa in their Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening. The Polish right-back was subbed off at half-time as his side succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the home of the French champions.
After the match, Cash was interviewed by his sister, Hannah, who works for CBS Sports. After assessing the game and Unai Emery’s decision to take him off at half-time, the interview concluded with Hannah telling her brother that he was proud of him, before the two shared a warm hug. The wholesome footage has gone viral and you can view it above.
10th April: Raphinha Reveals Conversation With Cubarsi After Stolen Goal
Raphinha ‘stole’ Cubarsi’s goal in Barcelona vs Dortmund
Raphinha caused controversy on Wednesday evening after he ‘stole’ Pau Cubarsi’s goal in Barcelona’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund. The Brazilian opened the scoring for Barca after he tapped home his teammate’s goalbound header. Speaking after the match, the winger revealed his conversation with Cubarsi after the goal, while he also revealed why he made sure it crossed the line. He said, per Yahoo!:
“I was worried about whether it was offside. I told Cubarsi that I had touched it and asked him for forgiveness—I even said it would count as his assist. I wanted to score goals and I’m here for that, but I didn’t know if it was already going in.”
9th April: Rio Ferdinand and Fans Shocked By Prince William’s Punditry
He was on hand to discuss Aston Villa’s match with PSG
Shortly before Aston Villa faced off against Paris Saint-Germain, Prince William provided some punditry and analysis on the match-up. Speaking to TNT Sport before kick-off, he discussed the tie with Rio Ferdinand and Ally McCoist. Former Manchester United man, Ferdinand, asked him about what he wanted to see from his beloved Villa in the game and Prince William discussed PSG’s pressing intensity and how his side needed to counter that. He said:
“They [PSG] press very high and so, I think for Unai Emery tonight and the team, it’s about managing that press. Unai likes it when teams come onto them and play quite a high press, but obviously there’s a limit and can we get around the press? Can we beat it? So, I’m thinking long-ball a bit and how are they going to get around the press. So, it’s going to be a challening night, but I’m looking forward to the tactics that Unai is going to have to employ.”
It was impressive analysis from him and Ferdinand even commented on it, pleading with Prince William not to go for any punditry jobs in the future as he’d be out of a job himself.
The segment left fans impressed as well, with plenty sharing their thoughts on social media. One supporter said: “Prince William is a really good pundit, he is articulate, intelligent and really knowledgeable about football,” while another posted: “Better analysis than half the pundits nowadays.”
9th April: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia embarrasses Axel Disasi With Sublime Goal
He left the Aston Villa man for dead before giving PSG the lead
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave Paris Saint-Germain the lead in their Champions League clash against Aston Villa in the most sublime of circumstances. The Ligue 1 champions found themselves 1-0 down in the first half, but turned things around and the former Napoli man showed why he’s one of the best wingers in the world with his side’s second goal of the evening.
After picking the ball up just inside the Villa half, he drove forward and showcased some incredible skill to roll the ball past Axel Disasi, leaving the Chelsea loanee in the dust before he fired a rocket into the top corner of Emi Martinez’ goal. It was simply incredible.
9th April: Raphinha Called Greedy Despite Goal vs Dormund
“Taking this Ballon d’Or race seriously”
Barcelona star Raphinha grabbed his 12th goal in 11 in the Champions League games as he opened the scoring against Borussia Dortmund. However, fans have suggested the Brazilian was selfish for taking the goal off a teammate.
Teenager Pau Cubarsi had flicked the ball towards goal and it looked as his touch would be enough to find the back of the net but Ballon d’Or chasing Raphinha stretched to get his name on the scoresheet.
“Raphinha trying to steal Cubarsi’s goal is genuinely selfish,” one fan wrote. Another said: “Raphinha this wasn’t necessary.” A third noted: “Raphinha taking this Ballon d’Or race seriously, brother fought for his life to get that touch.” A final one said: “Raphinha how greedy.”
9th April: Lamine Yamal showcases incredible skill
The youngster caused Dortmund all sorts of problems
Lamine Yamal was the star of the show early against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. The Barcelona winger was lively from the get-go and conjured up a number of promising chances. The highlight was his excellent bit of skill as he danced past Bensenbaini into the Dortmund area.
Unfortunately, his effort from a tight angle was saved by Kobel. In fact, if he’d have passed the ball to Robert Lewandowski, who was waiting in front of goal with acres of space, the Polish striker would have almost certainly hit the back of the net.
9th April: Micah Richards Takes Things Too Far With Crude Joke
Kate Abdo told him off, while Jamie Carragher was left in stitches
Micah Richards knew exactly what he was doing. The CBS Sports pundit was told off by a laughing Kate Abdo (now Kate Scott) for “always taking it down a notch” after watching a clip of a Bayern Munich fan spilling a drink on her face. Sat to Richards’ right was Jamie Carragher, who put his head on the desk and couldn’t contain his laughter.
All Richards said was “no comment” but that was enough for viewers to fear that the former England international might even get the sack from his role. “Micah Richards is about to get sacked on-air there’s no way he said what he just said,” one viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter). If you don’t get the joke or understand why the clip has gone viral on social media, that’s certainly not a bad thing. You’re probably just too innocent for this world.
8th April: What Thierry Henry Said To Kylian Mbappe Before Arsenal vs Real Madrid
The club legend made it crystal clear who he wanted to win on Tuesday night
While Thierry Henry clearly shares a good rapport with his French successor, Kylian Mbappe, he didn’t hide where his loyalties lay ahead of Tuesday night’s clash. The former Arsenal and Barcelona legend, now a pundit for CBS Sports, revealed exactly what he told the Real Madrid forward: “I don’t wish anything bad on him, but tonight I said to him: ‘Please, I don’t want to see you’.”
The Gunners have famously never won the Champions League, but beating the current holders and 15-time Kings of Europe in this year’s quarter-final would go a long way in proving they can under Mikel Arteta. They are already out of the FA Cup, seemingly out of the Premier League title race, and so desperately need a big performance in the continent’s premier competition. It’s safe to say they’d love to have Henry in their lineup tonight.
7th April: Phil Foden’s Reaction to Man Utd Fans’ Chants
New footage from the stands has emerged
Footage showing Phil Foden’s reaction to controversial chants from Manchester United fans during Sunday’s Manchester derby has emerged. Man City boss Pep Guardiola said the United supporters responsible for the chant showed a “lack of class”. The revered Catalan coach added: “It’s not United, it’s the people, you know? We are so exposed in the screen in world football – managers, owners, and football players especially. Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”
Foden clearly heard the chants directed towards him and reacted with a series of gestures – including putting his thumb up to the crowd. The England international was subbed off in the 57th minute for Jeremy Doku following an ineffective performance.
6th April: Ruben Amorim Fires Back at Gary Neville Being ‘Critical About Everything’
Manchester United and Manchester City played out one of the more dull Premier League pictures of the weekend as the fierce rivals had to settle for a 0-0 stalemate at Old Trafford. Former Red Devils captain Gary Neville was critical of both sets of players after the final whistle, claiming that the occasion lacked passion and energy.
When asked about the defender-turned-pundit’s comments during his post-match press conference, manager Ruben Amorim left everyone in stitches by responding: “I understand Gary Neville is critical about everything.” While he went on to admit his own shortcomings, the 40-year-old did well to think quickly on the spot and fire back at the club legend.
5th April: Dominik Szoboszlai’s Angry Reaction to Statue Unveil
The Liverpool man didn’t realise he was being pranked
Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai found himself the victim of a television prank when he was tricked into believing a statue of himself was being unveiled and it wound up looking horrendous and nothing like him. The midfielder was being secretly recorded as the statue was revealed and he couldn’t hide his disgusted reaction at the finished product.
The statue, which was made partially out of mobile phones, looked nothing like Szoboszlai, but he was told it was supposed to represent communication. He was clearly unimpressed with the statue and even said that it looked nothing like him as he was asked to pose next to it for a photo. Shortly after, he expressed his frustration with the design and when asked if he liked it, he said:
“No. I was this close to walking out. I only didn’t because I respect you.”
Things only got worse when he saw merchandise with the statue’s face, or its imitation of his face plastered all over it. He went on to say: “This resembles me as much, forgive me, as nothing. From the neck down, it’s fine. Just the head part,” and when describing the statue to someone on the phone, he claimed: “It just looks like my a** turned inside out.”
Fortunately, he saw the funny side when it was all revealed to be a prank and was seen laughing after.
4th April: VAR Official Suspended After ‘Betting’ During Game
The official was caught on camera on a betting app during a top flight fixture in Bulgaria
A VAR official in Bulgaria has been suspended pending an investigation as to whether or not he was using a betting app during a game in the country’s top flight. On Wednesday night, CSKA Sofia claimed a 1-0 win over Lokomotiv Sofia in the Parva Liga. However, it was off-field matters that caused greater headlines, as footage showed one of the VAR officials scrolling on his phone on what looked to be a betting app, before quickly putting it down after becoming aware that the cameras had cut to the VAR room.
Hawk-Eye Innovations, who are in charge of the technology in Bulgaria and other countries in Europe, released a statement confirming that the official in question had been suspended and that, if found guilty, he would be removed from his role moving forward.
“Hawk-Eye Innovations acknowledges with regret an incident involving one of its VAR operators during the Parva Liga match between PFC CSKA-Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Sofia yesterday evening (2nd April 2025). Live footage from the camera situation in the VAR operations room documented the individual utilising a personal smartphone during the match and appearing to engage in inappropriate activities which would constitute gross misconduct in relation to the responsibilities of their assigned role.
“Hawk-Eye fully recognises the necessity for its personnel to act at all times with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity in its trusted position working with the Bulgarian Football Union and other customers, and the company has strong policies in place that explicitly forbid its employees and contractors from engaging in any betting activity in any sports or competitions where it provides officiating services.”
2nd April: Granit Xhaka Rages at Leverkusen Fan After Shock Defeat
Leverkusen were stunned by third tier side, Arminia Bielefeld, in the German Cup
Leverkusen were stunned by Arminia Bielefield in what could go down as one of the biggest shocks in German football history on Tuesday evening. The reigning German champions went into their German Cup semi-final clash against the third tier side as the heavy favourites. However, against all odds, Arminia’s fairytale cup run continued as they won 2-1 to progress to the final.
Footage emerged after the match of Granit Xhaka getting into a furious exchange with one of the travelling Leverkusen fans. It is unknown exactly what was said between the pair, but it’s clear to see that things got seriously heated. It’s not the first time Xhaka has clashed with his own fans, having also done so at former team Arsenal.
Arminia are now just one match away from glory. They will face either Stuttgart or RB Leipzig in the final on May 24.
Walker said what he thought about Felix
Tunnel footage has emerged of Kyle Walker scoling teammate Joao Felix at half-time of AC Milan’s match against Lazio on Tuesday afternoon. Despite struggling since joining the Italian club on loan from Chelsea in January, the Portuguese forward was named in his side’s starting lineup ahead of star player Rafael Leao.
However, things didn’t go to plan and Felix did not put in his best performance. Footage has emerged which shows that Walker wasn’t too impressed with his teammate. As Milan’s players were walking out of the tunnel for the second half, footage has emerged of the Englishman telling Felix, per football-italia: “Just pass the ball, we are not Messi. No-one here is Messi, pass the ball.”
