Thierry Henry Named the Only British Stadium That Could Rival Arsenal’s Atmosphere

Now often seen working as either a pundit or coach, Thierry Henry enjoyed a legendary playing career before moving into his current ventures. Henry began his career as a winger with Monaco, enjoying a breakout 1996/97 season and helping his club win Ligue 1 before reaching the Champions League semi-finals in the following campaign.

Henry’s form with Monaco caught the attention of Juventus, who signed the attacker in the 1999 January window. Despite his talent, Henry struggled in Italy, never looking settled or at his best with the Turin side. In the very next transfer window, Arsene Wenger, who worked with Henry at Monaco, brought him to Arsenal.

In North London, Wenger wasted no time transitioning Henry into a striker, a position in which he became one of the world’s best players at his peak. Across eight years with the Gunners, Henry won two Premier League titles, one as part of the famous Invincibles side of the 2003/04 season, and three FA Cups, whilst reaching the final of the 2005/06 Champions League.

After eight years with Arsenal, Henry joined Barcelona in 2007, with whom he won two La Liga titles and lifted the Champions League in 2009. Henry finished his career with New York Red Bulls, retiring in 2014 and shifting into coaching soon after.

Henry is undoubtedly one of the greatest Premier League strikers of all time and remains an immensely respected figure in the game. In 2013, as per the Liverpool Echo, Henry revealed which English stadium, aside from Arsenal’s, he always admired.

‘It Must Be Amazing’

Henry spoke highly of Premier League ground

Be it due to domestic or continental matches, Henry played at many iconic grounds during his time as a striker, from Highbury and Old Trafford to the Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu. As per the Frenchman, however, it was Liverpool’s Anfield that captured his admiration. Henry said:

“For my first few years at Arsenal we didn’t do well there, but we improved. It’s the atmosphere I love. It’s unbelievable. I’ve played in a lot of stadiums but for me there is nothing like playing at Liverpool. Nothing can beat Highbury, of course, but playing at Anfield was great. The fans always sing and hold up their scarves before and after the game – whether they have won or lost. It must be amazing if you are a Liverpool player.”

Anfield has long been regarded as an intimidating place to play, a ground that, at its best, can generate an atmosphere that few other stadiums can. The Liverpool faithful were in full voice across the 2024/25 season as the Reds won their second Premier League title.

For a player of Henry’s calibre, who took to the pitch at so many famous stadiums, to speak so highly of Anfield is a high level of praise and a testament to the feeling that Liverpool supporters can create.
