Sunderland have reportedly agreed a deal with RB Leipzig to sign Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida on deadline day.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Geertruida is set to join the Black Cats on loan with the option to buy. He has been granted permission to head to the UK to undergo a medical before completing his move to the Stadium of Light.
Geertruida is a versatile right-back who can also be deployed at centre-back and defensive midfield, providing vital depth for Regis Le Bris and his club’s return to the Premier League. He has earned 17 caps for the Netherlands and joins a list of impressive acquisitions, including Granit Xhaka, who arrived from the Bundesliga.
Sunderland Agree Loan-To-Buy Deal For Geertruida
Geertruida has arrived on Wearside to complete the switch to Sunderland, where he’ll be looking for more game time after falling out of favour under Ole Werner at Leipzig. He hasn’t made an appearance this season and started just two of his last five Bundesliga games at Red Bull Arena.
The Dutchman will become Le Bris’ 13th summer signing, should the deal be finalised, and he’ll link up with Nordi Mukiele, also formerly of Leipzig. He might not be the last piece of business conducted by the Black Cats, though, as it looks increasingly likely that Marc Guiu’s loan will be terminated, and he’ll be heading back to Chelsea following Liam Delap’s injury on the weekend.
