Steven Gerrard Didn’t Hesitate When Naming His Greatest Liverpool Player of All Time

Steven Gerrard refused to select himself when asked who he thought was the greatest player to ever represent Liverpool. The iconic Anfield captain is widely regarded as one of the best to ever wear a red shirt, with his on-field quality, leadership, and unwavering loyalty to the club during tough times making him a beloved figure on the red half of Merseyside.

Gerrard made 710 appearances for the club, placing him third in the all-time appearance list behind Ian Callaghan and Jamie Carragher. He also won multiple honours, including the historic 2005 Champions League triumph, in which his role in completing the insurmountable three-goal deficit cannot be understated. However, the man himself believes that there is one other name with an even greater legacy at the famous club.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard was asked to name his number one across a number of different categories, including his greatest teammate and manager he’s worked with, the English player of all time, and his best midfield partnership – where he interestingly chose himself and Paul Scholes despite their troubles during the golden generation.

When it came to naming the greatest Liverpool player though, Gerrard didn’t hesistate to name club legend and former manager, Kenny Dalglish.

While the nature of the format meant that Gerrard was unable to elaborate much on his thought process in picking Dalglish, he hasn’t shied away from speaking highly of the Scot in years gone by.

When Dalglish left Liverpool as manager in 2012, the midfielder paid a touching tribute to the European Cup winner, describing as his ‘idol.’

“The last 24 hours has been a rollercoaster for me. I am very sad to see Kenny leave our club. He is my idol and will always be my idol and I would like to express my thanks and appreciation for what he has done for my career.”

As a player, Dalglish would spend 13 fruitful years at Liverpool, signing from Celtic in 1977. The dynamic attacking midfielder would go on to play 515 times for the club and combining for well over 300 goal involvements. During his time at Anfield, Dalglish would claim three European Cups and eight First Division titles as the Reds dominated both English and continental football throughout the 1980s.
