Stéphane Le Mignan’s position as manager of FC Metz is coming under increasing danger, following Sunday’s 6-1 defeat to Lille OSC.
Le Mignan accrued a lot of credit by bringing Metz back into Ligue 1 at the first time of asking last season. However, it has been a dire start to the campaign for Les Grenats. With just two points from their first nine games, Metz are winless and bottom of the table. In addition, they have the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 26 goals in their opening nine Ligue 1 games.
The situation has worsened in October. Metz began the month with a 3-0 defeat to Olympique de Marseille, continued with a 4-0 loss to Toulouse FC, and then conceded six against Lille on Sunday. 13-1 is the aggregate scoreline in Metz’s last three league games.
Naturally, Le Mignan’s job is under threat, as L’Équipe confirm, however, the calendar could save the manager for now. There is a rare midweek round of fixtures in France, and on Wednesday, Metz will face RC Lens, before then coming up against FC Nantes on Sunday. Given that Metz will play three matches within a week, Le Mignan may be spared for now, but there can be no doubt that the upcoming days will be decisive.
