St. Pauli linked with surprise late swoop for Argentine striker Rodrigo Castillo (26)

According to a domestic report, FC St. Pauli may be on the verge of a very interesting January signing for their attack. The Hamburger Abendblatt has picked up a dispatch from Argentine portal Mercado de Pases concerning St. Pauli interest in Argentine striker Rodrigo Castillo. Apparently, the Bundesliga outfit is prepared to invest €4m in the rising talent.

Who is Rodrigo Castillo?

The 26-year-old former River Plate man certainly counts as a late bloomer. Castillo only arrived at his Argentine Primera outfit Club Atletico Lanús this past summer on a €1.7m transfer this past summer. Since then, however, the technically gifted forward has managed to double his estimated market value from €2m to €4m. St. Pauli have reportedly attempted to acquire Castillo on loan with a purchase option in the €4m range.

Will the deal go through?

The Hamburger Abendblatt claims that discussions between the Bundesliga outfit and the player’s entourage have taken place, but that Lanús aren’t interested in loaning their new signing out. The Kiezkicker – after signing Norwegian midfielder Mathias Rasmussen for around €1m are operating on a deeper transfer budget deficit than estimated at the start of the current January 2026 transfer window.

It thus looks as if, despite plenty of interest from the player, nothing much will come of the rumors. One must nevertheless that St. Pauli – facing relegation – have every reason to engage in risks that will place them deeper in debt. Moreover, the late autumn signing of Magdeburg striker Martijn Kaars also counted as a move few saw coming.
