Spain and Man City star Rodri threatens players’ strike over fixture congestion

There has been plenty of talk surrounding the massive fixture congestion that is set to plague football starting this season and moving forward.

With the revamped Champions League format, as well as a new format for the FIFA Club World Cup, many teams are set to play more games than ever before this season.

Today has been the first day we have seen any real pushback, with Man City and Spain star Rodri speaking on the topic ahead of Man City’s Champions League tie against Inter tomorrow.

As reported by Sky Sports News on X, the 28-year-old mentioned the fact that players are ‘close’ to striking, and are nearing a point where they will have ‘no other option’.

This is the first real indication that players may be willing to take action against the rising number of football matches being played, with many voicing their displeasure up to now, but few willing to threaten that action could be taken.

It will be interesting to see in the coming weeks if other players come forward with similar threats to strike and to see just how far this sentiment spreads amongst footballers.
