Goals from Ermedin Demirovic and Bilal El Khannouss secured VfB Stuttgart a 2-0 win against then unbeaten St. Pauli on Friday night’s Bundesliga fixture to kick-off Matchday 3.
Speaking after the game, Sebastian Hoeneß commended his team’s performance:
“I’m very happy with the performance. It was a good display and a deserved win. We played with a lot of energy, depth and dynamism. The players who came into the team gave us a boost. If we can get the basics right on the pitch like we did today, games like this can go our way.”
Going into this fixture, Stuttgart endured their worst start to a season with just three points from a possible nine, and had struggled to adapt to life after the departures of Enzo Millot and Nick Woltemade, but their performance against St. Pauli was their best so far this season.
Demirovic opened the scoring in the 43rd minute with a delicately chipped ball over Nikola Vasilj before El Khannouss doubled VfB’s lead just five minutes after the break with a superbly placed shot into the bottom corner.
