Sebastiaan Bornauw ends a four-year chapter at VfL Wolfsburg, signing with Leeds United in the Premier League.

Sebastiaan Bornauw’s time at VfL Wolfsburg officially comes to an end, as he has signed with Premier League side Leeds United FC on a four-year contract.

The 26-year-old Belgian centre-back was at Elland Road this afternoon to finalise the terms and sign the papers; he will be joining another Wolfsburg departure from this season, Lukas Nmecha, at the English side. In return, Wolfsburg will receive £5.1 million, as Bornauw’s contract in Germany was valid until 2026.

Bornauw said to media representatives of the club, in the official press release posted today, that it has always been a dream for him to be in the Premier League, and to play for such a major club on the English and European club football circuits.

“I am really pleased to be here, it is such an amazing club. I think the Premier League for me is the biggest league in the world. Obviously, Germany is a really strong league too, but I think as a football player, we aim for the highest and I think the Premier League is the highest for me,” he said.

When asked to explain his skillsets and what he will bring to Leeds, he said, “I am quite an aggressive defender, I would say. I’m strong. I like duels and I think that’s pretty English.”

He added, “I think as a centre-back, I am dangerous in front of the goal – I like set pieces, offensive set pieces. So that is what I think my game is, I would say.”

Bornauw also posted on social media about the departure, which, translated from German, reads as follows:

“After four years at VfL Wolfsburg, it is time to close a chapter. I want to sincerely thank all of those who accompanied and supported me during this time – especially my teammates, the coaching staff, the entire staff and the fans.

“It was a great honour to play for this club; I have been able to do a lot here, both physically and personally, and I look back on this time with a lot of gratitude. I wish the club and everyone involved in it the very best for the future. Thank you so much for everything!”
