AS Saint-Étienne star striker Lucas Stassin (20) wants to leave the club, according to Sacha Tavolieri.
A key motivation behind this decision is Stassin’s desire to represent Belgium at the 2026 World Cup. Although he is yet to make his senior national team debut, spending a season in Ligue 2 with Saint-Étienne could hinder his chances of making the squad for the tournament in the United States next summer.
Saint-Étienne manager Eirik Horneland stated last month that he ‘expected’ Stassin to remain at the club next season. However, that now appears increasingly unlikely.
Stassin came through the academy at RSC Anderlecht. After making a handful of appearances for the first team, he moved to Westerlo. There, Stassin scored 11 goals in 32 games and earned himself a move to Saint-Étienne in Ligue 1.
Stassin was a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for Saint-Étienne. Despite the club’s relegation with just 30 points, he recorded 12 goals and 4 assists in 29 appearances – finishing the campaign in emphatic form, with nine goals in his final 10 matches.
