Borussia Dortmund were forced to field a second-string defence against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday as Nico Schlotterbeck, Waldemar Anton and Emre Can all missed out due to illness.
Speaking at a post-match press conference after his side’s 2-3 defeat, Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin revealed that the trio could also miss Tuesday’s match against Holstein Kiel.
“They are all in such bad shape, to be honest. I don’t have much hope. ‘Schlotti’, Emre, ‘Waldi’, they’re all tough guys. They all wanted to play, but it wasn’t possible. We’ll have to see,” he said.
In total, 12 team members were affected by the virus, including Alexander Meyer and Filippo Mané, who were left out of the squad as well.
Almugera Kabar, who made his first start, had struggled with illness in the build-up to the match.
“Some of the guys who started shouldn’t have been there,” complained Sahin.
