Roy Keane once refused to speak to one of his former teammates for years following a confrontation involving the pair.
Now often seen working as a pundit, Keane enjoyed an illustrious career, spending his prime with Manchester United, who he joined in 1993. A midfielder, Keane was a key part of the first team throughout his tenure, renowned for his tackling and physicality alongside his quality on the ball and leadership capabilities as he won numerous honours with the Red Devils.
Keane was no stranger to controversy during his time as a player, a product of his tough, combative style of play. Though generally reserved for his opponents, there were times at which Keane clashed with his teammates, such as when he was involved in an altercation with one particular forward.
Keane Did Not Speak With Sheringham
As per The Mirror, Keane spent years ignoring forward Teddy Sheringham. The striker joined Man United in 1997, being part of the team that became the first-ever club from England to win a European treble in the 1998/99 season.
Involved in the story also was fellow striker Andy Cole. It remains well known that the pair never truly got along as their careers overlapped at Old Trafford and the forward, who also enjoyed stints with Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers, once said:
“Teddy joined Manchester United, that season I remember conceding a goal. He turned around to me and said, ‘That was your fault.’ My head was absolutely steaming then. I got into the dressing room and I lunged at him, I was just about to through a punch. By the time I realised, Roy (Keane) was trying to fight him.”
Sheringham would elaborate on the confrontation, saying:
“We had a fall out, Keaney turned around and said ‘Why don’t you f*** off back to London with your f****** Ferrari and your penthouse?’ I went, ‘What are you popping me out for…’ He turned around and grabbed my tie and everyone jumped in and stopped it…He didn’t say a word to me for the next three-and-a-half years.”
Such was Keane’s character, that holding a grudge for so long does not seem out of the realm of possibility. The former midfielder would, as per his autobiography released in 2002, touch briefly on the matter, noting:
“Teddy arrived for training on his first day at the club in his red Ferrari, every inch the confident Londoner. The chemistry between us was never right.”
