Robert Pirès believes that Arsenal may sack manager Mikel Arteta, should the Gunners fail to win a title this season.
Pirès, who played 228 games for Arsenal, scoring 51 goals in that time, was speaking to Foot Mercato when he said that Arteta may need silverware to keep in his role at the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta arrived at Arsenal in 2019, and whilst he won the FA Cup with the side back in the 2019-20 season, he has not won another title since. He has, however, brought the London club back into contention, not only domestically, but also on the European stage.
He has made Arsenal a force once again, but they are yet to convert their revival into titles, with Arteta’s side frequently losing out to Manchester City, and then Liverpool, in recent years. Pirès, now a consultant for Canal Plus, has told Foot Mercato that this may have to change soon.
“In my opinion, if there isn’t a trophy this year, the management will think about getting another manager because he has been there for five years and, unfortunately, the title eludes him. What matters to the fans is being the champion. So, now, there has been money that has been spent in the summer transfer window. There were some expectations from him that were realised by the Arsenal board. If Arsenal don’t finish as champions, I think that there will certainly be a change on the bench,” he said.
