The summer transfer window around MLS inches closer and talks for deals are accelerating.
GIVEMESPORT’s MLS insider Tom Bogert has the latest updates.
Red Bulls continue Werner talks as well as Berggren
The New York Red Bulls continue negotiations to sign German forward Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, sources tell GIVEMESPORT, as they also work on other summer business.
RBNY are in advanced talks to sign Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren from Polish club Raków, sources say. The talks were first reported by Kacper Tomczyk.
Berggren, 27, is a defensive midfielder and will slot in to a midfield group that just lost Felipe Carballo, who returns to Gremio as his loan expires.
The one-time Sweden international had spent his entire career in his home country before heading to Poland in 2022. Berggren has made 105 appearances for Raków after 156 for Swedish side Hacken. He won the Swedish league and Polish league with those clubs.
The big pursuit remains Werner, who would be RBNY’s third DP after Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Talks are ongoing as the club looks to land the former Germany international.
RBNY made MLS Cup last year with a memorable playoff run filled with upsets, but fell in the final to the LA Galaxy. They sit seventh in an incredibly competitive and deep Eastern Conference with 29 points. Ninth place and fifth place are separated by just five points.
Crew working on deal to keep Andres Herrera
The Columbus Crew are in negotiations to keep wingback Andres Herrera as his initial loan from River Plate expired, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.
The Crew and River are in talks for a new deal, with all parties working towards a resolution that keeps Herrera in Columbus. Brianna Mac Kay first reported the club are still in negotiations.
If a deal is struck as all parties hope, Herrera should be able to continue playing despite the window being closed. Sources say that with the player’s International Transfer Certificate remaining in the United States, he should be good to play. If not, he’d have to wait until the window opens on July 24 to be re-registered.
Herrera, 26, has slowly become a more regular contributor for Wilfried Nancy’s side, breaking into a very strong starting group. He has 11 appearances (six starts) this season, though three of those starts have come in the club’s last five matches.
Columbus are closing a deal to sign Hugo Picard from EA Guingamp on a U-22 initiative deal, as previously revealed by GIVEMESPORT. The Crew still have an open DP spot to use this summer if they so choose.
St. Louis bid for young center back
St. Louis City have bid for Serbian youth international center back Vojin Serafimovic of FK Cukaricki, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.
Serafimovic, 19, has already made 43 appearances in the Cukaricki first team in his young career. He was most recently with Serbia’s U-21 national team.
St. Louis sit second-bottom in the Western Conference with 15 points after 20 matches, now 11 points below the playoff line. The club fired manager Olof Mellberg just a few months into the season.
Colorado in market for center back
After a deal for Israel international center back Stav Lemkin fell through, the Colorado Rapids remain in the market for a center back, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.
The club agreed a deal for Lemkin, with the player initially giving his green light before FC Twente came in late and turned the player’s head. Colorado have other targets they are working on to bolster their defensive unit.
The summer transfer window in MLS opens on July 24. Expect Colorado to be active.
Portsmouth want Griffin Yow
English Championship side Portsmouth are pursuing American winger Griffin Yow, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.
Portsmouth have not placed an official bid yet, but have had contact with Yow’s camp about a potential move.
Yow is likely to leave Westerlo this summer. His contract expires in a year.
D.C. United retain a 35% sell-on clause in Yow. He is a product of their academy and was transferred to Westerlo.
Yow, 22, had eight goals and three assists in just over 2,000 minutes this year in Belgium.
