Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga on playing at left-back: “It still isn’t my position.”

Speaking to Canal Plus after Real Madrid’s 4-0 aggregate victory over Chelsea in the Champions League, France international Eduardo Camavinga (20) admitted that he still doesn’t feel as though left-back is his position. 

Camavinga was first utilised as a left-back by France manager Didier Deschamps during the World Cup. The former Stade Rennais player is accustomed to playing in midfield, but Deschamps said during the most recent international break that Camavinga was being called up as a left-back. 

He is now beginning to feature as a left-back at club level, and was notably part of Real Madrid’s defence during the Spanish side’s win at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. Speaking to Canal Plus post-match, international and club teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni said that he was “strong everywhere (whether in defence or midfield).”

Camavinga was then asked whether he is enjoying playing at left-back more now, and he responded, “No, not yet (laughs). The most important thing is to help the team, so today I did it again. But no, it still isn’t my position.” 

Camavinga and his teammates will likely come up against Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Champions League. The Premier League side carry a 3-0 advantage into their second-leg tie against Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.
