It’s the women’s Clasico this weekend in Spain with Real Madrid and Barcelona meeting in Valdebebas. Real Madrid Femenino were only officially formed two years ago, so the rivalry is still in its infancy but they have already emerged as the most likely challengers to Barça in Liga F this season.

Real Madrid have only dropped 2 points so far, winning 5 of their 6 league matches, scoring 20 and conceding only 3. However given Barcelona didn’t drop a single point last season and haven’t so far this, draws certainly feel like defeats. It’s no exaggeration to say that Real Madrid really need a result here if they want to fight for this title.

They come into this game following a 4-0 win at Villarreal in midweek. It was tighter than it sounds though with Las Blancas only breaking the deadlock in the 68th minute before adding three late goals including a brace from substitute Nahikari García. Coach Alberto Toril would have had one eye on this game though with a view to keeping players fresh for it.

For Barcelona, this may be their toughest league match in recent years with Real Madrid clearly having improved since last season. The Catalans haven’t shown much sign of frailty this season, winning all 7 matches, with 25 scored and only 2 conceded but they were really pushed by Levante last weekend and could only win 2-1 against the Valencia side.

The recent fallout involving the Spanish national side potentially adds an extra degree of spice to this game. A large Barcelona contingent were involved in a protest against national team boss Jorge Vilda which resulted in them not being part of the squad for the recent internationals which included a historic win over the USA. The Real Madrid players were involved and if there is any kind of split in the camp, we could see tensions boil over in what is a huge game for both sides.

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-2 Barcelona

This is the acid test of where Real Madrid are at and whether they have truly closed the gap to Barcelona. They lost the two league meetings by an aggregate score of 8-1 last season and also suffered an 8-3 aggregate defeat in the Champions League Quarter-Finals. It does certainly feel like Las Blancas are in a better place to be competitive this term but Barcelona’s league record over the last couple of years is truly remarkable and it feels like they may still have the edge.
