Rangers reach agreement with Marseille for Derek Cornelius

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Rangers have reached an agreement in principle with Olympique de Marseille to sign Derek Cornelius (27) on loan, but with an option to make the deal permanent.

The Canadian international arrived in Marseille last summer from Malmö FF, making 21 appearances last season, but struggled to maintain a place in Roberto De Zerbi’s plans. His first season at the club notably saw his manager pick midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia (32) over him as centre-back.

The writing was on the wall for the defender, and he has been edging closer to the exit door, especially with Marseille making moves in the transfer window to strengthen in his position. There was an attempt by Serie A side Cremonese to steal the defender from under Rangers’ noses, but that appears to have fallen flat, with Cornelius expected to arrive in Scotland tomorrow.

This season, he briefly featured during the victory over Paris FC, and tonight came on for Bilal Nadir in the 1-0 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais, following CJ Egan-Riley’s first-half red card.
