Rangers fans caused a delay in their club’s latest match against Hibernian in response to their form in the opening stages of the season.
It was a summer of rebuild for Rangers, who saw 49ers Enterprises, majority owners of Premier League side Leeds United, take control of the club. The 2024/25 campaign was another poor one for the Glaswegians, ending with former midfielder Barry Ferguson at the helm as interim manager.
In his place, Rangers chose to appoint Russell Martin, who spent time at the club during his playing career. The manager had been out of work since being sacked by Southampton, having become known for his dedication to his patient, passing brand of football.
Despite a high influx of signings, Rangers have endured a dismal start to the Premiership season. At the time of writing, the club have drawn four and lost one of their opening five league matches, marking one of their worst starts to a season in modern history.
Such are the expectations of Rangers fans that many have already called for Martin to be sacked, as the club is not one that can afford the time for a manager that needs months to embed his system. As pressure continues to rise on Martin, supporters have now showcased their frustrations.
Rangers Clash Brought to a Halt
As per the Scottish Sun, a protest had been planned by Union Bears, one of Rangers’ biggest supporter groups. Thousands gathered an hour before their Scottish League Cup clash at Ibrox against Hibernian, making it clear that they were unimpressed with both Martin and their current board, or in particular, chief executive Patrick Stewart.
Rangers’ latest league game, against Hearts, was one that they lost 2-0, sparking even more outrage, which had been building particularly since the Glaswegians crashed out of Champions League qualification after a 9-1 battering against Club Brugge on aggregate.
In the match against Hibs itself, tennis balls were quickly thrown onto the pitch as a sign of protest. The number was such, that the game was temporarily delayed in order for calm to be restored. Whatever the future has in store for Rangers, it seems apparent that fans have already lost patience with their new manager.
