Martin Zubimendi was the driving force in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest and earned high praise from Troy Deeney, who lauded the Spanish international for ‘running the show’ on Saturday afternoon.
Zubimendi scored his first two goals for Arsenal in a third victory of the season for Mikel Arteta’s side, with his opener a powerful volley from Noni Madueke’s corner in the first half.
Deeney said Zubimendi’s technique was ‘frightening’ on his first goal in an Arsenal shirt, and also praised the 26-year-old’s second-half effort, a precise header from Leandro Trossard’s cross.
The BBC pundit said Zubimendi showed exactly why Arsenal brought him in over the summer transfer window – the Spanish midfielder delivered a commanding display against Forest and looks set to play an important role in Arteta’s plans this season.
Troy Deeney Hails Martin Zubimendi
Deeney, writing for BBC, named Zubimendi in his Premier League Team of the Week and praised the Spaniard for both his calmness on the ball and scoring his first two goals in an Arsenal shirt:
“The technique on the first of his two goals against Nottingham Forest was frightening. It would have been so easy to get over that and put it into Row Z, and his header was nice as well.
“We see so many players that can’t head a ball any more and it was really calm. He ran the show and that is why Arsenal brought him in. They want him to be that maestro when they have loads of the ball.”
Zubimendi is only one of two Arsenal outfield players to have played every minute of Premier League football this season, along with Gabriel, who has also clocked up 360 minutes in four appearances.
The Spanish international has been pivotal for Arteta early in the campaign, with his partnership with Declan Rice instrumental to Arsenal’s positive start, securing nine points from a possible 12.
Arsenal signed Zubimendi for almost £60m from Spanish side Real Sociedad this summer, a year after he rejected an approach from Liverpool.
The 26-year-old was one of two holding midfielders Arsenal brought in during the transfer window, along with Christian Norgaard, who joined from Brentford and has yet to feature for his new club.
