Pedro Caixinha Issues Honest Verdict on Steven Gerrard Return

A return to Rangers could be on the cards for Steven Gerrard, but Pedro Caixinha says he should think carefully before returning to Ibrox for a second managerial spell, even though he would expect him to do well if he was named Gers boss again.

Rangers are searching for their next boss following the sacking of Russell Martin on Sunday night, with the Scottish giants looking for a coach to reignite a desperately disappointing season.

Steven Gerrard Identified as ‘Winner’ by Rangers Fans

Rangers lie in eighth position in the Scottish Premiership standings during the international break having won just one of their seven league games this term, which has left them 11 points adrift of leaders Hearts.

In Europe, they have already been knocked out of the Champions League and have two defeats from two in the Europa League, with a big turnaround required.

GIVEMESPORT sources revealed on Sunday, shortly after Martin’s departure was confirmed, that former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was a prime candidate for the job at Ibrox, with the Liverpool legend subsequently holding face-to-face talks with Andrew Cavanagh and Paraag Marathe in London on Thursday.

Gerrard is said to be ‘open’ to becoming Gers boss once more, as per GIVEMESPORT sources, having stopped Celtic winning 10 in a row during his previous spell with the Teddy Bears, but former Rangers manager Caixinha believes there are very few examples where returning to your former side to manage has worked out.

Speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT at the Portugal Football Summit 2025 on Thursday, the 54-year-old said:

“We have an expression in Portugal, ‘Never come back to a place that you were happy’. There are some situations when you come back to a club where you were really happy five or so years later and it can work.

“Jose Mourinho did it at Chelsea, for example. With Gerrard, he knows the club better than me. He spent more time than me there. He’s British. He’s someone who is identified by Rangers fans as a winner, and blocked Celtic’s 10-in-a-row. He is identified as having success in the near past.”

Steven Gerrard Will do ‘OK’ if he Re-Joins Rangers

Caixinha believes that Gerrard will do a good job should he be the man to take the reins at Rangers again, although there are deeper issues than just the manager at Ibrox.

The Portuguese manager believes the players have let the club down this season, following a huge summer in which 14 new players arrived under the leadership of Martin.

Caixinha said:

“I think he can do OK if he returns. But in the end, football is about players. And I don’t think Rangers have the players at this moment in time that can compete at the level Rangers demand. So the problems do not only lie with the manager.”

Rangers’ next match is at home to Dundee United a week on Saturday, and the 49ers will hope to have their new manager – Gerrard or not – in place by then.
