Thirty-three-year-old Belgian international Axel Witsel’s move to Spain is complete. The veteran heads to the sixth separate domestic leaguenof his career following stints in Belgium, Portugal, Russia, China and Germany. On his most recent stop in the Bundesrepublik, he played a total of 104 league games for the BVB. His lone piece of silverware came in capturing the domestic cup in 2021.
Across all competitions, Witsel made 143 appearances for Borussia, scoring 13 goals and registering six assists. It had long been known that his expiring contract would not be extended. The player whom die Schwarzgelben once shelled out €20 million for in 2018 thus departs German football absent any renumeration for his Bundesliga club.
