As previously reported by Foot Mercato, Lyon have been allowed by UEFA to feature in next season’s Europa League campaign. Les Gones have confirmed the report through a press release. “After validating their financial viability procedure, Olympique Lyonnais have signed an agreement with UEFA’s club financial control body“, the statement reads.
Lyon have qualified for the Europa League courtesy of their sixth-place finish in Ligue 1. Les Gones also have PSG to thank for. The Ligue 1 champions prevented Reims from qualifying for the Europa League by beating them in the Coupe de France final. Despite their financial woes, the French FA has also issued Lyon their UEFA licence.
Nevertheless, Lyon’s statement indicates that their participation in the Europa League is subject to a favorable outcome of the appeal of the DNCG’s decision. The French football regulators opted not to overturn the provisional Ligue 2 relegation they handed to Lyon last November. It essentially means Lyon will either compete in both Ligue 1 and the Europa League, or only feature in Ligue 2.
