Eintracht Frankfurt have announced that striker Hugo Ekitike has left the club to join Premier League champions Liverpool.
Ekitiké joins the Premier League side for a reported €90m fee with add-ons included and will sign a contract at Liverpool until 2031. The Merseyside club has been in need of a striker this summer as they look to offload Darwin Nunez, while the sudden and tragic passing of Diogo Jota also meant they had to look for additional numbers in attack.
Newcastle had looked like the 23-year-old’s primary destination as they began negotiations with Frankfurt over a deal for the striker, but after Liverpool expressed their interest in Alexander Isak, it made Newcastle turned elsewhere.
The 23-year-old leaves Frankfurt after only 18 months at the club. Ekitiké joined in January 2024 for €16.5m from PSG. After an initially slow period at Deutsche Bank Park, the Frenchman came into his own last season, initially alongside Omar Marmoush, before leading the Frankfurt line by himself, ending the season with 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 games.
Just like clockwork, Frankfurt have bought a striker for a low fee and sold them for a large amount. Ekitiké’s transfer has the potential to be Frankfurt’s second biggest ever sale, behind only Randal Kolo Muani (PSG, €95m) and ahead of Marmoush (Manchester City, €75m) if add-ons are met. From this trio alone, the Bundesliga side has spent a total of €16.5m and made €260m.
On top of these three players, they have also sold Luka Jovic (Real Madrid, €63m) and Sebastien Haller (West Ham, €50m) for large fees.
Die Adler’s replacement for Ekitiké will likely be Jonathan Burkardt, who joined the club from Mainz earlier this summer. Michy Batshuayi and Elye Wahi will also provide support.
